CHAPTER 11

Kris had attended the same New Year’s Eve party ever since freshman year, and I was beyond ecstatic when she asked me to be her date. The “theme” (they always had a theme) was a White Party, which meant we all had to dress head to toe in white. In my opinion it was not the most flattering outfit color, but I still managed to throw together something I was quite happy with. Well, to be fair, Ana pulled together my outfit; I just used cash I’d gotten as Christmas gifts from my grandparents and a few aunts and uncles to pay for it.

My least favorite part were the straight-legged jeans. They fit well enough, I supposed, but I hated white pants. They just seemed weird. It wasn’t until we found the cable-knit sweater and off-white scarf that I thought I could pull it off. The best part was, we had enough money to buy Chuck Taylor’s instead of cheap white K-mart shoes.

When Kris arrived to pick me up, we looked at each other like we’d never seen one another before. My jaw hit the floor as I took her in; the dress beneath her pea coat made her look like an angel in human form. It had an empire waist (so I was informed) with beading and a v neckline; a loose-fitting layered skirt flowing beneath. It was probably more ideal for warmer months, but for a fancy party that required theme attire, it was perfect. My heart pounded loudly as I looked at her, absorbing how beautiful she was.

“Carly!?!” Her voice sounding somewhere between amazement and desire, she hugged me hello. There was no getting used to the feel of her body against mine—the feel of her in my arms—each time it was magical. It was a feeling I wanted to feel every day of my life. When we parted, she stood back, holding my hands out to the side to take me all in.

“Do I look alright?” I asked. Her head bobbing up and down, she looked at me intently with big, round eyes. “Better than alright.” Her words dripped and I felt sparks fly between us, stronger than ever. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe it was my confidence being at an all-time high, but she looked at me like she knew exactly what she wanted and I was it. Or maybe she’d always looked at me like that and I was finally starting to believe it enough to see it.

“You look amazing, by the way,” I said as I squeezed her hands.

The plan was to arrive as one big group, but Jenny had caught a horrible flu over the holiday and Sarah, despite confirming with Kris that morning, had a family party she apparently couldn’t get out of. She promised she would leave early after making the obligatory showing, but that still left a much smaller group of just Ana, Eric, Kris and I.

We met up in Big Al’s parking lot so we could carpool together.
